Located on a site near Okehampton in Devon, Airey and Coles were appointed to provide civil and structural design services for a new 70000 sq ft production facility and associated ancillaries for Forthglade, a manufacturer of luxury ethical pet food. The site in question required a fair amount of engineering work, such that the initial phase included an enabling works package to level the site and create a new access road. A major cut and fill exercise ensued with ground preparation in readiness to support the new building. The building is a four bay portal frame extending over 100m in length with internal offices, wet and dry production areas and high bay racking in the warehouse goods-out area.
As a team we had to work very closely with the client to ensure their work flow and production process were incorporated into the design. Similarly the infrastructure and drainage needed to meet the exacting requirements and specification required for food preparation.
The facility was opened in 2018 on programme and has enabled Forthglade to double their output from 40 million meals to 80 million. Another success story for Devon.
